Mangum Design-Build, Inc, a Raleigh-based custom home builder, recently hosted multiple representatives of the Virginia Concrete Masonry Association in Chapel Hill. The meeting was to establish fundamental basics of building concrete masonry homes in the state of Virginia using Mangum’s design concepts and cost to benefit analysis.
“Mr. Mangum’s understanding and emphasis on residential concrete homes offer new insight and alternatives to building new homes out of wood. His model for vertical integration is also about as unique as it gets. And it works”, says Gil Carpenter, VCMA representative.
Mr. Carpenter refers to Mangum’s unique concept of keeping all of the structural work on his homes in-house, through his sister company, Mangum Masonry, a residential/light commercial construction group.
“From day one, our goal is to offer clients the option of building a concrete masonry home at a small additional cost, which is currently hovering around 3-4% over the cost to build a home out of wood. Additionally, we’re supplementing our client savings by offering additional in house services that, at current model projections, place that figure closer to the 1% mark. Hence, we can explain to clients that they are able to have a concrete home for only 1% more than what it would cost to purchase a wood home.”, says Kevin Mangum, President, Mangum Companies.
A design and construction forum headed by the VCMA will meet in 1Q 2008, with strategies aimed at informing the general public about these opportunities, as well as educating builders on benefits they never knew could apply to residential construction.
